Job Description:

As a youth counselor with The Village, you would work with behaviorally challenging youth who need guidance and be a significant factor in their treatment (from admission to discharge) through different activities in the milieu and community.

JOB SUMMARY
The Youth Counselor II is responsible for the daily supervision and guidance of adolescent girls in a level 2 therapeutic group home. The youth counselor is responsible for guiding, teaching, and serving as a role model to youth utilizing a gender specific, relational, trauma informed, strength-based, culturally competent behavior model to ensure the safety and individual goals of each client are achieved. The Youth Counselor II reinforces the policies and philosophy of the organization while maintaining professional communication, verbal and written, with internal and external team members to ensure a strong team approach. The Youth Counselor II is an integral part of the treatment team and provides support to both the youth and his family while in residence and following his return to the community.

Program Administration

Supports the emotional and social growth of residents by establishing limits, boundaries and encouraging healthy relationships, a sense of community, responsibility, and accountability for behavior based on each residents individual goals.
Assists in planning, supervising and facilitation of the daily activities of clients, including bedtime and morning activities as well as working, studying, sports, etc.
Teaches clients personal hygiene, acceptable manners and good work and study habits as well as job and life skills in preparation for a healthy and productive adjustment upon discharge.
Prepare House Meeting Agenda weekly
Oversee and carry out shopping duties for the program while maintaining program budgets
Oversee menu planning in correlation with DCF and nursing nutrient guidelines
Oversee inventory of program supplies
Assist with the coordination of daily shift assignments, preparing shift change forms and updating program calendars
Updating program forms and lists when clients are admitted or discharged
Plan/ Coordinate Life Skills Classes
Lead staff when supervisors are not on shift for milieu and community issues
May provide additional related activities, as appropriate and assigned
Communication & Documentation

Works with Treatment Team to specify areas necessary for improvement as outlined in the residents treatment plan, maintaining extensive communication with other team members including peers, supervisors, clinicians and Program Director to assure a productive, informed environment within the organization.
Participates in staff and departmental meetings, in-service training programs and attends meetings, workshops and conferences as required by the organization.
May require being an active and contributing member of the Master Treatment Plan process, providing reports and on-going communication regarding assigned residents development.
Completes daily notes of each residents progress toward treatment goals.
Documents all incidents according to DCF and organizational requirements.
ADDITIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES:

House Maintenance

Performs security and safety measures by checking doors, windows, locks, fire alarms and extinguishers.
Maintains safety aspects of residential living by recognizing and correcting conditions, which are or could be safety hazards.
Performs food preparation and assistance, nutrition services, housekeeping and maintenance of clothes, linens, as assigned.

Demonstrates appropriate professional boundaries with residents, staff and others.
Adheres to the organizational code of ethics and standards for employee conduct.
Demonstrates respect and courtesy at all times.
Supervision and Judgment

Responsible for knowledge of and adherence to organizational and program policies and procedures.
Demonstrates proper judgment and decision making skills.
Demonstrates ability to work under close supervision in accordance with detailed instructions.
Experience and Skills:
Bachelor's Degree. Perferred major: Human Services and Social Work.
Must have a clean and valid drivers license and three (3) consecutive years of driving experience. Must have the ability to obtain a Public Service License, Medication Administration Certified, Therapeutic Crisis Intervention Certification, American Red Cross First Aid and CPR Certified. One to three years in human service field or experience working with special needs children.
1-2 years experience working with psychiatric and behavioral disordered children/adolescents preferred.
Training in Gender Specific, Trauma Informed, Strength Based, and Culturally Competent Behavior Models.
Basic computer skills MS Word, Outlook, preferred.
Physically able to perform the essential functions of the position, with or without reasonable accommodations, i.e. must be able to supervise groups of children and perform physical intervention if required; must be able to move freely from place to place without restriction.
Must be able to perform physical restraints, as needed according to CPI training and agency policy.
